Facebook is still the biggest social media platform out there. Although newer apps like SnapChat and Instagram are making waves, Facebook remains a stable and reliable place to build your brand, grow your audience and ultimately drive traffic and customers to your site.

However, Facebook and social media marketing isn’t as simple as sticking an ad up and waiting for the traffic to come. Check out these 5 simple tips to getting started and make sure you’re using your marketing budget the right way.

1) Know Your Audience

Creating generic ads that target everyone is going to result in no one connecting with your message. Facebook is so large and diverse that you only have seconds to make an impression - so you need to know that audience to tailor your ad to immediately grab their attention.

Consider your product and the target audience you are selling to. Do you want to target stay-at-home mothers? Entrepreneurs? Millennials? The more niche you get with your audience, the easier it will be to create a stand-out ad that speaks directly to the people you want to reach.

2) Tailor Made Ads

Once you’ve got your target audience in mind, here comes the tricky part: creating your ad. Boosting a post may get you a rise in likes to your Facebook page, but how many of those people are really interested in your brand long-term?

You need an ad that grabs your reader’s attention, engages them, and shows your audience why they need your brand in their lives. Think: what does your business offer people? Base your ad around this - you want people to realise that they’re missing something without your services. A tailor made ad needs to be made with your customers in mind, not your business.

3) Timing

Considering how quickly social media moves, timing is everything when it comes to Facebook advertising and social media advertising as a whole. Not thinking about the prime time to post your ad could result in thousands of potential readers totally missing it in their feeds, and your efforts could be wasted.

A study from CoSchedule revealed that the best times to post on Facebook are early morning and early afternoon, with these times leading to higher levels of engagement and a better click-through rate.

4) Follow Up

At this point, your custom-made ad should be generating traffic through to your site. This is the time that you need to be creating even more interesting, informative content and sharing it with your new audience. Follow-up on your original message and create a funnel through your content and different and varied social media posts that will lead to more conversions for your business.

5) Be Consistent

When it comes to marketing, consistency is key. One ad every few months isn’t going to create any dramatic results for your business. But frequent, planned ads can have a real impact on your growth.

Keep persisting, targeting your audience and following up with useful and interesting posts - you’ll be surprised at the impact a consistent marketing plan can make on Facebook!
