Ultimate Short Read

Go big or go home, right? Well, with us all staying at home, now is the time to be bold with your marketing spend and strategy. We know - we would say that. But trust us, it’s true.

Studies have shown a higher demand for digital marketing, SEO and creative branding agencies during lockdown, according to a top search tracking tool. Year on year, more time, money and energy goes into how brands appear online than ever before. What do all the big brands surviving coronavirus have in common? Maximising their online presence.

This report shows that despite the global uncertainty of the economic effects of the coronavirus crisis, people are actively seeking to increase their digital efforts - whether that’s a rebrand, a refresh or a branch into entirely new channels.

Why did this happen, and what does it mean for the future? Let’s break it down:

Everyone’s online

Let’s go for the simplest reason behind this shift first...as we all know, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown saw the numbers of us glued to our screens skyrocket. Social media alone saw a total increase of 300 million users on social media before and during the crisis. This is in addition to a huge increase in the amount of time we’ve been spending on screens - whether you’re an Apple or Android user, many of us are becoming familiar with huge spikes in our daily and weekly ‘Screen Time’ reports.

It’s no surprise - being unable to visit family, friends or access entertainment in the wider world has left us heavily reliant on using the internet for everything - from grocery shopping to socialising, today it’s being done on a screen. For the first time ever, almost all of the world’s transactions and interactions are taking place across the internet.

So, what’s been happening?

It’s no surprise that businesses have started to tap into this ‘captive audience’ - a world full of us scrolling and refreshing is surely a key place to redirect your marketing efforts. That helps to explain the noticeable uptick in searches across the board for agencies specialising in digital strategy,  SEO, and web development and design - with the most searched-term unsurprisingly being ‘social advertising’. Clearly, the fact that their customers are online hasn’t escaped big brands - moving campaigns and marketing efforts off the streets and instead bringing them to mobiles and social media. Of course, online spending isn’t new for anyone even the slightest bit familiar with advertising - even a year ago, it was predicted that almost two thirds of marketing ad spend would be online by the end of 2020.

What this means, however, is that the global shift in consumer behaviour (spending, interactions, customer service and reviews all taking place online) is directly impacting how businesses are spending their own money.

What’s in it for them?

It’s pretty simple - while the high street recovers, it no longer really matters what your brand looks like offline. In fact, it doesn’t really matter if you have an offline presence at all any more - we’re shopping from behind a screen, and as the multinational e-commerce giant Amazon will tell you, that’s a big market to tap into. Whether we’re talking social media advertising, SEO, web development or good old-fashioned e-commerce, companies who are surviving the COVID-19 crash are all doing the same thing: maximising their online presence.

Digital spend is the factor of the moment, determining whether your brand will thrive or flop: whether it’s your communications to your customers; your social media presence (are you fun enough on Instagram?); how active you are in updating your content; whether or not you’ve adapted to a new way of working - and whether or not you’re shouting about it enough, these are all key to how your company will look in a few months’ time.

Upping your digital spend is the easiest and most effective way to get your company in front of your customers. If you think about it, we’re working now with an even playing field - even Apple, Amazon, and Nike are sitting on the same screen as your business, and it doesn’t matter how many physical stores they have open or how plush their offices are. So - it’s time to polish that presence - engage that audience, and get your message to the people who need to see it.

Okay - so how do I start?
