Former Ultimate director, Jim Townsend, has taken part in the successful Prudential Ride London Bell Symphony. The aim was to smash the previous record attempt set at The University of Leipzig in 2003 for the largest number of bicycle bells rung simultaneously within a piece of music composed specifically for the event.
Joining the 639 strong Bike Bell Orchestra in Guildhall Yard, City of London on Saturday 9th August, the riders convincingly demolished the Leipzig record of 503 bells, ringing their specially tuned bells to the Westminster Chimes in a five minute orchestral piece for bells composed and conducted by Dominic Wheeler, Head of Opera at The Guildhall School of Music and led by students from the school.
Commenting later Jim said; “It probably sounds a bit quirky but in fact the attempt was taken very seriously by all concerned, professionally judged and adjudicated, with the result announced in front of the TV cameras and featured in news broadcasts on the day and on Channel 4’s ‘The Cycle Show’ later in the month. One bonus was that the participants got to keep their bells, which had been manufactured especially for the event,” he added.
Jim’s now has permanent pride of place on his handlebars!
